Things to Do in Kuala Lumpur & Selangor: Places Worth Exploring

City landmarks, Chinatown, parks and waterfalls around Selangor, and how to plan an itinerary you can actually enjoy at your own pace.

Travel guide · 16 September 2026

Kuala Lumpur is often the first place people think of when visiting this part of Malaysia, but there is much more to explore once you go beyond the city centre.

From modern landmarks and shopping districts to parks, cultural areas and attractions around Selangor, there are plenty of options for short trips, family outings and weekend drives.

Explore Kuala Lumpur’s famous landmarks

For first-time visitors, the Kuala Lumpur city centre is an obvious starting point.

The Petronas Twin Towers remain one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Around the same area, visitors can explore KLCC Park, shopping centres, restaurants and other attractions.

The city centre is especially interesting in the evening when the temperature becomes more comfortable and the surrounding areas become livelier.

Other popular areas include Bukit Bintang, Chinatown and Merdeka Square, each offering a different experience.

Spend time around Chinatown

Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown area is a good place to experience a mixture of history, food and modern city life.

Petaling Street is particularly popular with visitors, while nearby streets contain cafés, restaurants, old buildings and small shops.

The area is easy to combine with other attractions in the city, making it suitable for a half-day itinerary.

Take a break from the city

One advantage of staying in Selangor is having access to attractions outside central Kuala Lumpur.

For those who prefer nature, there are parks, waterfalls, recreational areas and hiking destinations around Selangor.

Places around Rawang, Hulu Selangor and other parts of the state can feel very different from the busy city centre. The scenery becomes greener, the roads quieter and the pace of the day slower.

These destinations are particularly suitable for travellers who want a short escape without travelling too far from Kuala Lumpur.

Family-friendly attractions

Families travelling with children have plenty of options.

Shopping malls around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor often have entertainment centres, cinemas, indoor activities and restaurants under one roof.

For a different experience, families can plan a day around outdoor attractions, recreational parks or animal-related attractions.

Having access to a car can make family trips easier, especially when travelling with young children, strollers or several bags.

Explore Selangor at your own pace

One of the easiest mistakes visitors make is trying to see everything in one day.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are large enough that it makes more sense to choose a particular area and explore it properly.

You could spend a morning in Kuala Lumpur, have lunch in Petaling Jaya, continue towards Shah Alam in the afternoon and end the day somewhere around Subang or Klang.

With flexible transportation, the itinerary does not have to follow a strict schedule.

Make time for the less tourist-focused places

Some of the most memorable experiences are not necessarily the famous attractions.

A quiet café, a local food stall, a neighbourhood market or a scenic drive can become part of the trip just as easily as a major tourist landmark.

If you have several days in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, leave at least one day open for exploring without a fixed plan.

You may discover a completely different side of the area simply by taking a different road.
